Lipmann, Fritz

(1899-1986)
   American biochemist, of German origin. With the rise of Nazism, he left Germany for the US, later moving to Denmark. Subsequently he became professor at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in 1957. He shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1953 for work on a compound he called coenzyme A, connected with the way carbohydrates, fats and proteins are broken down in the body for energy purposes.
